So, I never intended on writing this post. What I did intend on doing is bringing you a fun new holiday pattern that you could use to spruce up your Christmas decor!…But, things don’t always work out as planned. What happens when a project doesn’t work out?…
the struggle
I’m so thankful that God has given me a lot more follow through when it comes to designing. But man, this past week was a battle for sure! I probably spent 20 or more hours trying to get the idea in my head worked up in yarn and pattern form.
I’m sure it doesn’t help that I’m always trying to come up with some new and interesting way to do things…Just can’t stop though….love me some unique. 😉
I always like to find out “why” something works the way it does…not just get it to work. I feel like – especially as a pattern writer – this helps me explain the process in more understandable terms. Well, I got this particular project to work (sort of), but figuring out how to explain it was a whole. Nother. Thing!
silver lining
Whenever I have to redo something multiple times or take a different route with a project, I always try to look at it as more practice and more learning. Honestly tho, this time I just thought to myself – “wow, that was a big giant waste of time”!
After being bummed out for a little while, this post started coming to mind. I was reminded about how much I love designing and making, and even with these hiccups, it’s still one of my favorite things in the whole wide world! 🙂
Truth is, as a designer/maker, its not always going to work. But would that ever mean it wasn’t worth trying….No way! Creativity is a process and who knows, down the line that “big giant waste of time” might turn into a whole new design!
I also think through these challenges we learn more about ourselves, the way we handle disappointments and difficulties and how we can maybe work thorough those a different way in the future!
just some thoughts
I don’t know if this resonates with you or not. These are really just my thoughts on paper (or screen) about the recent events. But if so, I hope it’s encouraging! It’s rare when a design just flies off the hook/needles and onto the pattern page for me. It takes a lot of tries, a lot of work and A LOT of time. But it’s all worth it in the end! I hope it is for you, too! 🙂

The relevance of your posts constantly amazes me. Who hasn’t spent hours on something only to have it not work as planned? Success comes from trying and continuing to try in spite of setbacks. In fact I would venture to say that this is THE path to success! Keep it up!
