Candy Cane Cardigan
I have had my eye on this adorable Tunisian crochet sweater – the Candy Cane Cardigan pattern from Liefs Vans Suus forever! I can’t believe it took me this long to finally make it! BUT i’m excited that I now have a blog and can write a post about it! 🙂

I think sometimes when we have never tried something before we can subconsciously (and consciously) put it off. I don’t think this was the main reason I didn’t start the cardigan till now, but i’m sure it played a part….
That unknown I am speaking about in this case is Tunisian Crochet! Have you tried it?! This was my first project using it and I know it will certainly not be my last! If you haven’t tried it and want to, I definitely recommend going for it! It’s so much easier than you think – like seriously y’all – so easy!! I want to venture to say it’s even easier than regular crochet…ok, maybe not, but it’s definitely no harder.
My one recommendation is watching a YouTube video on the proper way to fasten off for Tunisian Crochet. It’s also simple, but a little more in depth than just a regular crochet fasten off.
Suus gives you detailed instructions for the Tunisian crochet stitch that she uses as well as lots of photos to help you in the pattern! It’s super easy to follow!
yarn decisions
Another thing that can surely slow down my project execution is choosing the right yarn! There were so many fun options I could have chosen for this cardigan and I had such a hard time committing to one.
I was originally thinking a neon and neutral situation would be fun – still do actually – I may need to make another one, hee hee. I also love love the original colors that Suus used. Just so many options people! 😉 I ended up going with this pretty burnt orange and aqua combo. It’s a little different than the colors I normally choose…and maybe that’s why I went for it. You never know with me….I am a color mystery. LOL!
I also added in some crochet thread and love the additional texture and interest that it gives! I have never used this Yarn Bee Must Be Merino yarn from Hobby Lobby before, but it drapes absolutely beautifully! The one drawback about it is that I feel like it pills fairly quickly.
pattern options
We all love having options, amiright?!
I decided to make a size S in this cardigan. I usually like an oversized fit, so I almost went with the M. But the original seemed to have a nice slouch, so I went with the S. I’m glad I did, It’s the perfect fit! 🙂
In the pattern Suus gives options for poofy sleeves or fitted sleeves as well as buttons or no buttons. She also instructs you on how to make it your desired length. Isn’t that so great?!! Lots of ways to personalize your sweater. I almost went for buttons, but I wanted to finish and wear it so badly that I opted to just plow through without. 😉
The poofy sleeves were just so fun that I couldn’t resist them! Since I decided not to do buttons, I just finished the border off with a single crochet, spike stitch, slip stitch combo. I really like the clean edge that it gives!
I love this cardigan and know I will wear it ALL the time! If you have been searching for just the right project to begin your Tunisian crochet journey, than look no further! This design is just so fun and cozy! A perfect addition to any wardrobe! Suus truly did such an awesome job on it! Make sure you check out all her current designs on Instagram!
