Eeeep! My first finished knit garment design! So excited to share details with you about my Total Eclipse of the Heart Sweater.
Honestly y’all, when I finally learned to knit (again), my main goal was to knit a sweater. And now I can’t believe that I have completed my first. knit. sweater….design!!! Garments are my absolute favorite thing to make, and I’m hoping the majority of my patterns will be clothing in the future. There’s just something so special about making your own clothes!
I have so many knit garment designs in my head that it’s hard to believe this is the only one I’ve completed thus far, lol!
that yarn tho
Can we first talk about this amazing yarn from Amanda Solomon! I “met” her on Instagram a couple of years ago and I have admired her beautiful yarn ever since! It has such a boho eclectic vibe that I totally relate with! I’ll be posting an interview with her very soon, so stay tuned!!
The colors are so vibrant, and the texture….can you even with that texture?!!! I love how unique each skein of her yarn is. They are all works of art! I knew when I received this yarn, it had to be made into something special! π And the Total Eclipse Of The Heart Sweater was born…
I complimented Amanda’s fabulous art yarn with this beautiful cozy wool from We Are Knitters. I have used it several times and not much compares to the soft, squishy, luxuriousness of this fiber! It’s also incredibly warm!
a heart is born
I can’t remember exactly when this design came to mind, but I am thrilled to see the idea in my head come to life through this yarn! I had recently learned intarsia knitting after working on the As If Tee by Shay Johnson. (You can find my blog post about that here!) I love free-hand drawing graphs, and this sweater gave me the opportunity to get creative with the hearts.
The back was so much fun to work up and I think, honestly, it’s my favorite part. I can’t get enough of the different textures and colors of this yarn in purl stitch! It just makes me so happy!! π I also love the crocheted neckline. I used 2 rows of single crochet, 1 row of spike stitch, and finished it off with a row of slip stitch….Thinking I will definitely use that combo in the future!
I do love the way this sweater fits, but I think next time i will go with a little bit wider of an armhole opening. I also need to make sure my bind off stitches are loose enough on the ribbed edging. These work, but could have been a little looser…All things you learn with each new project! π
I’m still new to garment designing and am excited to learn even more about sizing and fit! I won’t be writing a pattern for this particular sweater, but I will definitely be designing more in the future!…In fact, I have one in the works as we speak! π
