My sweet friend Tara from She’s Rooted Home sent me the Animal Friends of Pica Pau book for Christmas and I have had so much fun looking through it and picking out animals to make!

I chose the adorable Marcia Alpaca first. Doesn’t she just make you smile? π I made it for my daughter for Christmas and only used scrap yarn that I already had. My daughter was so excited to finally have a crocheted toy (she had been asking for a while)! π Here are the yarns I used for her:

After making Marcia, I already had plans to start another animal from the book for a baby gift. There is just something so special about a crocheted or knitted toy. So much love and time goes into each one!

I landed on Audrey Gazelle because – well, of course, her cuteness – but I also wanted to add in some embroidery somewhere, and her skirt seemed like the perfect place!
Since this was a baby gift, I wanted to find some awesome yarn for her! My choice: Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK. I had never used Paintbox Yarns before, but had always wanted to. This was a great opportunity! I am now officially obsessed and will definitely be using it for lots more projects!

paintbox yarn colors i used:
- Washed Teal Cotton DK
- Champagne White Cotton DK
- Soft Fudge Cotton DK
- Blush Pink Cotton DK
- Slate Gray Cotton DK
I especially love the Soft Fudge color! It is the prettiest warm brown and cant wait to use it again!
I don’t have a craft store near me, so I sometimes have to get creative with what I’ve got on hand. I do have a store that sells some basics, but it’s definitely no Hobby Lobby or Michael’s! π
A few of the adjustments I made for Audrey were:
- Using scrap yarn for stuffing instead of traditional stuffing.
- Embroidering eyes with crochet thread instead of using safety eyes.

- Using Champagne White for the ears instead of Soft Fudge (the main color).
When I ordered the yarn, I only ordered one skein of each color. I ran out of the Soft Fudge, so I decided to make the ears Champagne White instead. Then, I added the small amount of Soft Fudge I had left to the inside….Oh, I also gave her little short sleeves to save yarn. Hee Hee. It worked out pretty well, I think. π

- The last adjustment I made was to the skirt – I embroidered the initial of the babe receiving this little gazelle. π I originally had planned on adding two initials, but because of scale, I think one was the best choice. I used the same Slate Gray from the antlers and just divided it in half for a more delicate thread. (You can find more about the embroidery in my video below!)

This was definitely a little tricky to accomplish, but I really wanted it to have a personalized touch. I googled cursive fonts and chose my favorite, then – using basically an embroidery back stitch – I free-handed the ‘J’. I wrote the ‘J’ out on a piece of paper first so that I could get a feel for the curves of the letter. It took a couple tries, but I finally got it to look the way I wanted.

I have had so much fun diving into the cutieee world of amigurumi! It’s just the coolest to see the shapes come together to form the most adorable creatures! If you haven’t tried it yet and want to, go for it! Its so fun! π
