Light Of My Heart Cowl / Free spike stitch Crochet Pattern
measurements:
- finished cowl circumference measures approximately 33”
- finished cowl height measures approximately 8”
difficultly level: advanced beginner
us crochet terms
what you will need:
- Color A 1 skein buttercream Luxe Craft Alpaca Solid (or approximately 100 yds) in Taupe or another #6 super bulky weight yarn.
- Color B 1 skein buttercream Luxe Craft Thick & Thin (or approximately 50 yds) in Rust or another #6 super bulky weight textured yarn.
- Size US N/10mm crochet hook, or size needed to obtain gauge. To save time make sure to check gauge. GAUGE: 7sc x 7 rows = 4×4”
- Tapestry needle
pattern notes:
- This cowl is worked in two identical pieces that are slip stitched together horizontally and sewn together vertically.
- A textured yarn for Color B is highly recommended to achieve optimal texture.
- Make sure to keep your tension loose when working your spike stitches so that your project doesn’t bunch.
abbreviations:
- CH – chain
- STS – stitches
- SC – single crochet
- SP-1 – spike stitch 1 row below
- SP-2 – spike stitch 2 rows below
- SP-3 – spike stitch 3 rows below
- SP-4 – spike stitch 4 rows below
- SP-5 – spike stitch 5 rows below
- SP-6 – spike stitch 6 rows below
- REP – repeat
special stitches:
- Spike stitch (SP-1, SP-2, SP-3, SP-4, SP-5, SP-6) – insert hook in the SC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 rows below the top SC row. (photo 1 below) Yarn over and loosely pull up your loop until it meets the top SC row. Yarn over and pull through two loops on hook. This will give you an elongated SC called a spike stitch. (See photo 2 for what SP-1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 look like)

You will be making two of these pieces.
Do not count CH 1 as 1st SC throughout.
With Color A CH 51
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across; CH 1, turn. (50 SC)
Row 2: SC in first SC and in each SC across; CH 1, turn. (50 SC)
Rows 3-6: REP row 2. (50 SC)
Row 7: SC in first SC and in each SC across, but do not CH 1; change to Color B, CH 1, turn.
Fasten off Color A.
Row 8: (Remember to keep your tension loose as you work your spike (SP) stitches, and adjust your work as you go so that it remains straight and not bunched) with Color B, SC in first SC, *SP-6 in next SC, SP-3 in next SC, Sp-5 in next SC, SP-1 in next SC, SP-4 in next SC, SP-2 in next SC; REP from * until next to last SC, SC in last SC; CH 1, turn. (50 STS)
Row 9: SC in first SC, and in each ST across. (50 SC)
Fasten off Color B. Weave in ends.
assembling your two pieces
You are now ready to assemble your two pieces. Begin by placing both pieces wrong sides (photo 1 below) together (photo 2 below).

Working on the right sides and with Color B, Sl ST pieces together using the 50 single crochet STS on the top of each piece (photo 3 below). You will have 50 SL STS. Weave in ends. Place your completed rectangle right sides together. With tapestry needle and Color A, sew the two sides together to form a circle (photo 4 below) Weave in all remaining ends. Turn cowl right side out and enjoy! 🙂
