a yarn problem with a solution
Do you really need a yarn winder?

The short answer is no, however, I have experienced now both having one and not having one. And, I would say that it is wonderfully convenient to have one! Before I was graciously sent this yarn winder from Caydo, I wound all my scrap yarn into balls by hand. (You can find those organization videos on my YouTube channel). This definitely works. And you can still find neat and organized ways to store those wound up yarn balls. But, having a winding tool that creates stackable center-pull cakes is just such a game changer! I used to organize my hand-wound yarn balls in cubes by color and weight. Initially this was just fine, but after I started working with those yarn balls, and using them in projects, they became unraveled and messy. It was hard to keep them looking nice.
a solution to my yarn winding problems
Let the electric winding begin!

After receiving my yarn winder, I got to work testing out winding all different types of yarn weights and fabrications…From bulky polyester to super fine wool. I wanted to see how each yarn reacted to this new machine. It was so exciting to see those unraveling balls turn into beautiful, stackable cakes with an easy-to-use center pull! I made a whole YouTube video about how to use the Caydo Electric Yarn winder if you want to check it out! In the video, I share the unboxing, assembly, and use. I wound up a lot of yarn, y’all! ๐

It is recommended not to wind all your hanks of yarn into cakes until you are ready to use them for a project. Being wound in cake form for too long can possibly stretch the yarn. But, in my case, I had SO many already-wound balls of scrap yarn that this was a great organization option for me. As far as my new hand-dyed hanks of yarn go, I think I will wait till I am ready to work on a project before winding those just to be safe. ๐

My final thoughts…

I haven’t ever used a hand crank yarn winder (or a swift) before, so I can’t speak to the difference between that and this electric version. BUT, I do LOVE this one! I would absolutely recommend it! The yarn winder worked well with lots of different types and weights of yarn. The process was fast and efficient. I will certainly be winding up as much of my scrap yarn as possible as well as turning my hand-dyed hanks of yarn into cakes when I am ready to cast on a new project in the future!
