Sometimes as a pattern writer you want to just sit down and start knitting or crocheting with no major plan in place. And while I love being able to write patterns, it’s also nice to just wing it! π I usually have to think about what progress photos I need to take along the way, make sure I don’t miss writing down a single step and probably figure out lots of specific measurements beforehand. For this sweater though, I just wanted to grab my yarn and knitting needles and start knitting! I figured since I have a YouTube channel, why not just make a quick tutorial video that included all the steps on how to make this super easy knit sweater.

my inspiration
Color is one of the main sources of inspiration for my designs…I’m sure that comes as no shock if you have been following along with me for a while. π I love color, and more specifically, unique color combinations! I love it when I am looking at yarn in my stash drawer and a color combo just pops out at me. That’s exactly what happened with this sweater! I just happened to glance at my scrap yarn and saw these three yarn colors. They immediately seemed to fit together in my head and I had to give them a go!

This Bernat Velvet yarn is great, but I have to say, it is much easier to crochet with than knit with. For some reason it’s difficult to get an even tension with knitting the velvet. Has anyone else found this to be true? Even still, I absolutely love the texture that it gives, not to mention the super cozy vibe this sweater has! It reminds me of one of my favorite velour sweatshirts from my childhood. π
Let’s make a sweater!
what you will need:
- #4 aran or worsted weight for Color A: I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Light Sage.
- #5 bulky weight yarn for Color B: I used Bernat Velvet.
- #4 aran or worsted weight for Color C: I used Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn in Pink Neon.
- US 8/5mm circular knitting needles and US 10.5/6.5mm circular knitting needles.
- Tapestry needle
abbreviations:
- CO – cast on
- K – knit
- P – purl
- RND/S – round/s
- REP – repeat
- ST ST – stockinette stitch
- ST/STS – stitch/es
- BO – bind off

measurements:
- this sweater has about 16″ of positive ease. My bust measurement is approximately 36″ and the sweater circumference is 52″
- sweater length measures approximately 18″
- gauge: using 6.5mm needles and bulky yarn 12 STS x 16 rows = 4″

Note: remember when working stockinette stitch (ST ST) in the round, you will be knitting every round. When working ST ST flat, you will be knitting every K row and purling every P row.
how to knit a super easy sweater step by step:
- with 5mm knitting needles and Color A CO 186 STS.
- join to K in the round.
- K1 P1 rib for 20 RNDS or 3.5″.
- with Color B and 6.5mm knitting needles K ST ST (stockinette stitch) in the RND for 16 RNDS or 4″.
- using Color C K 3 RNDS.
- with Color A K 3 RNDS.
- with Color B K 3 RNDS; split for sleeves (93 STS each for the front and back). Place back panel 93 STS onto scrap yarn to work later.
- front panel – (you will now be working ST ST flat) with Color B ST ST for 13 more rows.
- using Color C work ST ST flat for 3 rows.
- with Color A work ST ST flat for 3 rows.
- with Color B work ST ST for 16 rows or 4″.
- BO all STS.
- REP steps 8-12 for back panel.
- starting from the outside edge and working inward (both sides), seam 30 STS or 11″. This will make your neck opening around 13″.
- with Color A pick up and K 50 STS around armhole opening.
- join to work in the round.
- work a K1 P1 rib for 5 RNDS.
- BO all STS.
- REP steps 15-18 for other sleeve.
