A while back my daughter made a little craft with yarn and glue on construction paper – the first inspiration for this design. I loved the simple rainbow and thought that I-Cords would add some great texture!
I hope you guys enjoy making this rainbow and that it brings some happiness to your day! π

us crochet terms

pattern:
STARTING YOUR SQUARE
With 4.25mm crochet hook and main color CH 23.
Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and in each CH across; CH 1 turn. (22 SC)
Row 2: SC in each SC across; CH 1, turn.
Rows 3-28: REP row 2.
Note: if your square is smaller or larger than 6″x6″, then the number of rows will vary. Crochet as many rows as you need to reach your width measurement.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends.
Steam block if desired.
I-CORDS
You will be making four I-Cord strands for the rainbow using your 3.5mm crochet hook. Before you begin making your I-cords, decide the color pattern you want your rainbow to go in. I chose:
- pink
- blue
- orange
- green

Check out my video tutorial below if you have never made an I-cord or if you need a quick refresher. π

Once you have decided on the color pattern for your I-Cord rainbow, you will know how long you need to make each I-Cord strand. Your first I-Cord (and longest piece) will measure approximately 8.5″. After that, each strand in your rainbow will decrease by 1″ (see photo below).

a detailed tutorial on how to attach your i-cord to your square is included in the video above.
Place your longest I-Cord strand on your square. If your square measures 6″x6″, this will be on the 7th row down from the top. You should have 6 rows above your rainbow and 6 rows below your rainbow. You will have 4 stitches on each side (photo below).
Note: It may be helpful to place a stitch marker or safety pin where the top of your rainbow should go.

If your square has a different measurement than 6″x6″, adjust your first rainbow strand so that it has an even measurement on the top and bottom as well as on the sides.
Note: It may be helpful to tack down the sides and center top of your rainbow strand with a piece of spare yarn before you begin seaming. (Details in video)

You will be seaming the longest (8.5″) I-Cord strand first, followed by the next longest and so on….With tapestry needle and coordinating yarn color, catching the bars on the inside of your I-Cord, seam each I-Cord strand to your square. You will be inserting your needle from the back of your square to the front and then from the front to the back all the way around your rainbow strand. I like to move up one row at a time for each stitch to keep it as consistent as possible. (Refer to the video above for specifics on seaming.)
Note: If you do not want to have the seaming show up on the back of your square, you will need to sew on the underside of your I-Cord on the front of your square.
Fasten off.
Weave in ends. The video above also includes suggestions for weaving in your ends.
Congrats on your rainbow! π
