I love a good chunky knit blanket don’t you? There is just something so cozy about snuggling up on your couch or favorite chair with a squishy throw. I have had this easy chunky knit blanket pattern in the works for quite a while and am just now bringing you the pattern for it! Better late than never though, right? π I actually had an entirely different design in mind when I first bought this beautiful We Are Knitters wool. But, I love the sudden turn the design took after playing around with stitches and I hope you do, too!

all about the stitch
For this chunky knit blanket I use the Stamen Stitch. It’s one of my all-time favorite knit stitches and I absolutely love the texture it gives! It’s also super easy and so visually appealing when knitting it with two different colors. If you want to check out the Stamen Stitch before starting this blanket, you can find my tutorial with video included [here]. I used this stitch for the first time with my Cloud Catcher Beanie. And then again – this time in the round – for my Unicorn Sparkle Beanie. You can find the free patterns for those beanies [here].

I play around with the Stamen Stitch pattern on this throw by, not only using two colors, but also alternating the color pattern about a quarter of the way through. Both sides of this stitch have such a unique and cool look. I just had to feature them both! I also didn’t want to have all those ends to weave in at the end, so I made pretty tassels out of them! LOL! π This throw is so fun and satisfying to make. I just know you will love bringing it to life! Let’s get started!

pattern notes:

- When you begin a new row with a new color you will leave a 5″ or longer tail at the beginning and end of each row (shown in photo above). These ends are what we will make our tassels out of at the end. Pay careful attention to rows 57 and 58 as these will not have yarn tails. We will add yarn for those tassels when we have bound off our STS. Pull your yarn tails to tighten as you go so that they don’t come out.

making your tassels
Skip ahead to 9:11 in the video to see how I made my tassels and added in yarn where needed or follow instructions below.
make sure fringe is straight secure yarn ends before tying
Lay the blanket flat with the fringes from your yarn ends straight. Make sure they are snug and secure next to the blanket edge (above right photo).
2 strand Color A, 2 strands Color B tie in a knot
Holding 2 strands of Color A in one hand and 2 strands of Color B in the other (above left photo), tie the 4 strands in a knot (above right photo). Continue on this way down both sides of your blanket keeping in mind you will need to add in yarn on rows 57 & 58 as well as on your CO an BO edges.
Skip ahead to 10:56 in the video to see how I added in my yarn strands or follow the instructions below.
Cut an approximately 15″ strand of each Color A and Color B and thread your tapestry needle.
Keeping in mind whether your Color A or Color B strands are facing you – insert your corresponding yarn color threaded tapestry needle underneath a ST on the top side of your blanket in the row 57 & 58 space (Color A shown in above photos). Pull yarn halfway through. REP these steps for the underside of the blanket. Tie all 4 yarn strands in a knot to form your tassel.
REP the above steps for the other side of your blanket as well as for the CO and BO edge. The amount of yarn tails will be slightly different for your CO edge. Skip ahead to 13:20 in the video to see how I attached yarn on my CO edge.

Trim your tassels to the desired length. Weave in or felt any ends that you may have from attaching a new skein of yarn. Congrats on your new blanket! π
