I am so excited to introduce you to Anna, the wonderfully talented and beautifully kind artist behind Lovanii Design. She is such a gifted crochet hook + pattern designer and I can’t wait for y’all to see her work!
I am so glad I have had the opportunity to “meet” Anna on Instagram. She is truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. And I am so thankful we have had the chance to become friends!
I love her whimsical and and botanical style. She creates the most beautiful artwork, not only on her crochet hooks, but also in her finished crochet pieces. Her approach to her craft is so refreshing and is truly inspiring. Let’s get to know Anna! 🙂
Tell us a little about yourself.
Hi there! I live and work in one of the most culturally diverse cities in the UK, which can be very inspiring on its own! There, I live with my husband and 2 kids not far away from some beautiful hills and woodlands – which also bring inspiration.
I love, apart from crocheting and making hooks, 😉 long walks, music and vintage books (especially botanical ones).
How did you get into carving and painting crochet hooks?
I’ve always loved unique and quirky looking crochet hooks, but when I tried to look for something that suited my taste, I realized that there wasn’t currently anything like that on the market. So, I decided I had to create the hooks myself. I asked my husband if he would teach me how to carve in the wood (as he is a very talented person with many skills). He showed me how to do it. And then it was just practice, practice and once again practice, which brought me to the place I am today 😉
However, painting on them I learnt from scratch myself….I had no idea I could paint or draw anything before that ….
What is your favorite part of creating the hooks?
I enjoy all the stages of it but the absolute favorite has to be the painting part!!! Also, I love seeing the beautiful transformation of the branch to the crochet hook!
Where do you get your inspiration?
I find inspiration in many things around me, like from places, art, people and books but mostly from trees and nature as I often paint flowers and trees on my hooks.
What makers inspire you the most?
I find William Morris’ patterns very inspiring, Japanese art is also a large source of inspiration for me.
Tell us about the future plans for your business.
I would love to see Lovanii Design bloom on different levels as I still love crocheting as much as making hooks. I would love to write more patterns…Recently, I released a free rose hexagon pattern, which is available on my Instagram.
I am in the process of completing a pattern for a shawl using this beautiful motif. Also, I have a lot of ideas for new, creative hooks, which you may be seeing soon. In general, I would love to turn this into more of a business than a hobby 🙂
Where can your crochet hooks, patterns and pieces be purchased?
My hooks are available at my [online shop].
My patterns and hooks are available on [Etsy].
Do you have an absolute favorite hook or crocheted piece?
My favorite would be a pair of Plum blossom hooks. It was definitely not love at first sight as I really disliked the darker hook – I just couldn’t get the shape right. …( I was even tempted to throw it away 😉 ) Then, I made another one and I actually loved how they look together!! I thought they really complemented each other.
What advice would you give someone who wanted to make their own crochet hooks?
I would say go for it!! If you don’t try you won’t know if it’s for you. I’m so grateful I had the courage to have a go at it.
