This knit and crochet pillow pattern is cute + quirky and is the perfect way to experiment with yarn weights and textures! Sometimes it’s just all about the yarn, amiright?! 😉

I couldn’t resist playing with two (well, really three) different yarn weights for this knit and crochet pillow pattern. The star of the show is a gorgeous hand-spun yarn from Knit Collage for the front panel. It’s complemented by the perfect neutral shade from Hobby Lobby for the back, and the pillow is complete with a pop of color from Lionbrand for the bobbles.
The result is a fun and quirky mix of texture, color, knit and crochet. It really is all about the yarn!

assembling pillow
seaming left side
With right sides of both panels facing you (back panel – purl side, front panel – knit side) line up the right edge of the back panel with the left edge of the front panel. (left photo below) Begin at the bottom with a long enough strand of Color B to stitch all the way around the pillow. (see arrows for seaming direction in left photo below)
First, place tapestry needle under approximately 6 purl STS (ST counts may vary slightly. Be sure to keep them consistent across the entire side) from the right side of back panel, (right photo above) pull needle and yarn strand through.
Next, place needle under the left-slanted part of the ST from the front panel. (left photo below) Tug your yarn strand slightly as you go to keep your seam even. (right photo below)
Continue seaming this way until you reach the end of your side. The RS of your finished side seam should look like the photo below
seaming top and bottom
Fold pillow in half with WS touching. (photo below)
First, insert tapestry needle with yarn strand through the inside part (left photo below) of approximately 5 top STS (ST counts may vary slightly. Be sure to keep them consistent across the entire top and bottom) from your back panel. Then, insert tapestry needle through the outside part of 1 top ST from your front panel. (right photo below)
Next, insert tapestry needle into the inside part of approximately 3 top STS from your back panel. (left photo below) (remember that your ST counts may vary slightly, just be sure to keep them consistent across the top and bottom) Then, insert tapestry needle through the outside part of 1 top ST from your front panel again. (right photo below)
Continue seaming this way (3 top STS from back panel, 1 top ST from front panel…) until you have approximately 5 top STS left on your back panel and 1 on your front panel. Insert tapestry needle through the inside part of the last 5 top STS from your back panel, and finish your top seam by inserting your tapestry needle through the outside part of last top ST from your front panel. You will repeat these instructions for the bottom of your pillow after the pillow form has been inserted.
Your finished top and bottom seam should look like the photo below.
seaming right side
Seam right side the same as the left, except instead of inserting the tapestry needle through the left-slanted part of the ST on the front panel, you will insert it through the part of the ST indicated with circles in the photo below. (Be sure to keep your ST count consistent.)
Insert pillow form and seam bottom the same as the top. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
crochet bobble border
You will be making two cluster stitches and joining them together to form each “bobble”.
With the back side of the pillow facing you, using color C, and 5mm hook, attach yarn at the top right corner of the pillow along the seam.
Cluster stitch:
CH 5
In 3rd CH from hook *begin a DC, (yarn over, insert hook, yarn over pull up a loop, yarn over pull through two loops on hook…) but do not yarn over and pull through last two loops on hook. REP from * two more times. (You will have 4 loops on hook) Yarn over and pull through all 4 loops on hook. (This will give you a cluster stitch)
CH 3
Make second cluster stitch in the top (left photo below) of your first cluster stitch, join with SL ST in the base (right photo below) of first cluster.
CH 2, attach with SLST approximately 1.25” from beginning base CH of bobble along the seam. (photo below)
Here’s a quick video that takes you through the steps!
Be careful not to pull the pillow seam too much when making your bobbles. Hold the bobble at the base while you are working with it to prevent this from happening. Continue making your bobble border around all sides of the pillow until last bobble. To finish, SLST in the base of first bobble made. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Enjoy your new pillow!
