How in the world did we end up moving to Aspen, CO…. Sometimes I really have to take a step back, stand in awe of all that God has done, and ask myself this very question.
As I sit here surrounded by moving boxes once again…About to move into our new apartment…I can’t help but reflect on and be overwhelmed by this amazing journey!
when the dream began
7 years ago, my husband and I decided we wanted to head to the mountains for our 10 year anniversary. We had just planned on a super fun snowboarding trip to this iconic mountain town. (My husband being the actual snowboarder and me a wannabe, LOL) But instead, we found ourselves absolutely in LOVE with this quaint, artistic and magnificent place. Little did we know that God was beginning to build a dream in our hearts that would grow into an absolute reality.
How hilarious is this picture by the way?! Instagram filtering at it’s finest. π
stepping out in faith
To make a long story (a 7 year story to be exact) short, I will just skip to the part where we dropped everything, packed up our home and headed west.
I may expound more on the details leading up to this leap in a later post. But the bottom line is, God told us to “go” so we did. All we knew was the where and the when. We still had no idea of the how. One major confirmation before we left though, was being told “you don’t have to know how because you know Him”
One might think that once you have confirmation of God’s will for your life, and you say “yes”, everything else will immediately fall into place. Nope! Well – I should say – at least not in our eyes. π He was calling us to a daily, hourly, minute by minute trust that – to be quite honest – was scary as crap!
Sure, we were ecstatic to be given the green light for our move to Aspen, but It’s not quite as fun when you have no job, no home and no safety net…And that’s just it….God wanted us to trust HIM to be our safety net, nothing else.
Not knowing exactly where to start, we just took one day at a time. We had booked an Airbnb in Kansas (if you ever find yourself in Sylvan Grove Kansas, by the way, I highly recommend this Airbnb. Not sponsored or anything. It’s just good!) and planned on staying at a friend’s house in Denver. Beyond that we had no idea…
next stop, the ranch
We had only planned on staying in Denver for one night, but we were so exhausted from pushing through the cross country move so quickly, that we decided to stay another. My husband continued to apply for jobs in Aspen. (something he had been doing already for over a year) And we scoured Airbnb for our next stop.
We came across Cedar Ridge Ranch. It was delightful with it’s tiny house cabin, beautiful 60 acres, and adorable alpacas. We decided this would be the our next destination.
We only booked one week because we thought, surely, the rest of the plan would be revealed in that amount of time. One week turned into one month and one month into two….
During that time, we built a wonderful friendship with the owners of Cedar Ridge Ranch – The Johnson’s. We lovingly now call them our Colorado family. π Oh, and I cannot leave out the other members of our Colorado family – the “Pacos”. (My daughter’s nickname for these adorable alpacas.)
I’ve even had the opportunity to knit and crochet with the wool from these cuties…More on that though in a future post.
Thankfully, during those two months, God provided a job for my husband with the city that we love so much and a place for us to live for 6 months. (if you are familiar with Aspen, then you know how difficult it is to find affordable housing) It was truly a miracle!
the best is yet to come
We now have a beautiful and more permanent home in Aspen, and we couldn’t be more excited for the future that God has planned! This journey has not been an easy one, but I wouldn’t trade a minute of it because of all the ways God has chosen to reveal Himself through it. He is the author of big dreams and the illustrator of how those dreams point to Him. The best really is yet to come…

I LOVE the way that God lovingly led you through the good, the hard and the in between. I love the way that you trusted without fail in every moment. You inspire us all and remind us where our security is found.

I’m so thankful it was encouraging! π He is so faithful to sustain us and carry us through when we can’t see the outcome.
